The principles of sustainable development guide the efforts of the many partners that work on a daily basis to redevelop the Menomonee River Valley. The internationally acclaimed Bruntland Report called for "sustainable development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (United Nations Commission on Environment and Development, 1987). Sustainable development will be achieved in the Valley through environmental stewardship and job creation that benefits of the surrounding neighborhoods. A Community Visioning Workshop in 1999 (or Sustainable Design Charrette) resulted in designs that gave form and substance to the community's vision for sustainable development. The Workshop produced the 'Keys to Sustainability,' which are factors that must be addressed to redevelop and restore the Valley. In 2002, a National Design Competition used the Keys to Sustainability to redesign the west end of the Valley. The winning design, from Wenk Associates in Denver CO, is a 160-acre business park with 60-acres of stormwater treatment and community park space. Implementation of the competition's winning design is now in progress and the public will soon have the opportunity to experience the sustainable design principles at work. The Menomonee Valley Sustainable Design Guidelines use the same principals described above to provide specific steps by which new buildings can be designed for high-performance.
