MENOMONEE VALLEY BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT A business improvement district is a geographic area in which property owners agree to a voluntary annual assessment (in addition to their regular property taxes) to provide funds for projects that improve the area. The Menomonee Valley Business Improvement District (BID #26) was created in 1999. Its initial operating plan provides for five years of special assessments based on property size. Operating plans and budgets for the BID are approved annually by the Board of Directors. To date, the BID has contributed its assessment to Menomonee Valley Partners to support redevelopment activities. Menomonee Valley Partners also provides administrative services for the BID. In 1991, the MVBA launched a campaign to form a business improvement district, but met with strong resistance. The organization spent the next several years developing a closer working relationship with City government, educating and informing Valley businesses, and building a stronger organizations. In 1997, the MVBA co-sponsored the Menomonee Valley Land Use Plan. In 1999, it was instrumental in the second, successful effort to create a business improvement district as well as the creation of Menomonee Valley Partners. MVBA is a membership organization with lunch meetings approximately five times per year, a quarterly newsletter, a membership directory and networking opportunities. Contact: CITY OF MILWAUKEE
